Although I was somewhat familiar with the Wizard of Oz story, I had never actually read it or even watched the film. Reading it helped open up a different way of thinking for me. It helped me see that things are not always what they seem. It persuaded me to look at everything differently. Some of the essays in the Language Awareness book helped me see that as well. One essay that stands out is “On Being 17, Bright, and Unable to Read,” by David Raymond. It helped me see that sometimes we need to actually see things to understand them. We should look for the signs as well as be able to analyze the interpretation of those signs.
